Seattle

Seattle

What we call “Seattle” sits on the unceded ancestral land of the Coast Salish peoples; namely the Suquamish and Duwamish Tribes. Coast Salish peoples continue to live here and have lived here for thousands of years before white settlers arrived and had their own extensive trade, social, and knowledge networks. When white settles moved from their originaltownsite on Alki Point to Pioneer Square in the mid-1800’s, they named the new village after the Duwamish Chief Sealth (pronounced See-ahth). The anglicized name of Chief Sealth was Chief Seattle. He was an excellent leader and speaker and was known as a peacekeeper between First Nations peoples and white settlers. We encourage you to learn more about the Coast Salish, First Nations, and Duwamish Tribe’s people before your visit!
