A work in progress collection of all things Leelanau!
A trip to the region isn't complete without a dune climb! The dunes are a very kid friendly activity--you can climb as much or as little as you like. If you're interested in a longer excursion, hike the 3.5 mile out-and-back trail to Lake Michigan. The journey takes most hikers 3-4 hours. Bring water!
The TART Trails website is a great resource for cycling trails in the region. We love biking along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail. This paved and gravel path is protected from street traffic and connects much of the National Lakeshore. The trail takes cyclists through forests and small towns, and even to the base of the climbing dunes. On the east side of the peninsula, the Leelanau Trail connects riders from Traverse City all the way up to Suttons Bay. This 17 mile stretch is paved and separated from the road. Riders pass through forests, orchards, and vineyards. And if you're in Traverse City, you might make use of the extensive TART Trails network. TC is frequently voted one of Michigan's most bike-friendly cities!
The best things about visiting a vineyard in Northern Michigan are the views. Here are a few favorites: Verterra Winery in Northport is high on a ridge, and has gorgeous views of Grand Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan. Ciccone Vineyard and Winery in Suttons Bay has a great lake views, a beautiful historic barn, and was started by Madonna's family. French Valley Vineyard in Cedar nestled into a valley, and is very kid-friendly with tons of open lawn space and even a play structure.
Rachel's family has been canoeing, kayaking, and tubing down the Platte River for years. It's a great way to spot some wildlife! We recommend getting an early start to beat the crowds.
The lighthouse and beach at Point Betsie are a little further south in Frankfort. There are always rock hunters on this beach looking for treasures!
