How our story began

10 • 4 • 2006

Elmer and I first started talking to each other at the beginning of our Senior Year of High School in 2006. While we knew of one another prior to that since Jr. High, we never bumped into each other. It wasn't until one day after 3rd period, I was walking with my friend, when all of sudden I noticed someone had rested their arm on my shoulder. I looked up to see who this mystery person was; it was Elmer. He smiled at me and I said, "Oh, hi Elmer." It was at that moment, I knew he was someone I wanted to get to know. We began talking more, writing notes to each other, and walking to all of our classes together. Early one morning Elmer asked me to go to his locker with him. Once we got there he bent down to get his books and then took a softball out of his Invader Zim, Gir messenger bag. He looked up at me and said, " I thought you might like this." I smiled as he tossed it up to me. As I was looking at it, I noticed there was writing on it. I turned it around and it said, "Will you be my girl? 10/04/06." As soon as I read it, he got up and I looked at him and said, "Yes."

The proposal

9 • 1 • 2018

It was Labor Day weekend and Elmer had surprised me with a trip to Chicago and tickets to see 'Hamilton.' I was so excited to see this musical and couldn't believe we were actually going to go! The night of the show, we went to an Italian restaurant and had an amazing dinner. We talked, laughed, and reminisced about how far we have come and our journey thus far in the Midwest. After dinner we walked to the CIBC Theatre across the street. Once we were in our seats, Elmer told me we should go take pictures at the edge of the balcony (anyone who knows me, knows I love pictures, so of course I couldn't resist.) We got to the edge and he took a picture of me and then he wanted a picture of both of us. He asked a man that happened to be walking down to his seat to take a photo. Right as we were about to take the picture, Elmer looked at me and said, "Hold on, there's one more thing I have to do." It was at that moment he pulled out a ring from his pocket and got down on one knee. He asked me to marry him and of course, I said "yes!" The crowd of people already in their seats clapped and cheered for us. It was such a great night knowing I would finally be marrying the love of my life!
