How We Got Here

The condensed edition.

Cameron and Rachel's story begins the way many do these days: on a dating app. Never one to put much faith in the apps, Rachel (known to most as Sink) decided on a whim to give 'em a try, absolutely sure she'd be kissing frogs for months until ultimately throwing in the towel and deleting every single app. Instead, Cam's profile popped up within 24 hours. It was your Average Man's Dating Profile: not much information included (although mercifully lacking a guy-smiling-with-fish-he-just-caught profile pic), but something about him felt...familiar? Sink's gut whispered (OK, SHOUTED): "Worth a shot, girl." Spoiler: her gut was right. Sink did end up deleting every single dating app, but she didn't have to kiss a single frog beforehand—Cam was Sink's first and last date on the apps. In retrospect, they may have been destined to meet. Sink and Cam later discovered they'd been unknowingly circling the same corners of New York for years. Among other near misses, they attended the same Classic Stage Company production of Assassins just days apart in 2021. Anyway, like any proper New York romance, their first date began with each of them wandering through a sea of tourists at Bryant Park's Winter Village while trying to figure out where the other was. Sink was standing at the top of the staircase on Sixth Avenue when Cam finally spotted her. The crowd parted, a beam of light descended from the heavens, and time briefly stood still, as it does when one is about to fall in love, right?  What followed was a stroll through the market and eventually an escape from the crowds to a speakeasy hidden behind the shoe department at Saks Fifth Avenue. They talked for hours before saying a hopeful goodbye at the subway. Both went home for the holidays thoroughly smitten, telling their families all about the someone they'd just met. A few weeks and one more date later, Cam bravely made the trip down to the Philadelphia area for date number three, which required meeting Sink's entire family at her niece Trudy's first birthday party (the only day that worked for both of their packed calendars). Sink's family welcomed him with open arms, and before long, everyone agreed there might be something to this. Since then, they've traveled to countless cities, tried more restaurants than they can remember, worked out in hotel gyms across the country, perfected their coffee routine, sung at the top of their lungs in cars, danced in kitchens, laughed on trains, cried when life called for it, and built a life together that is ambitious, collaborative, and uniquely their own. Sink and Cam begin this next chapter together with immense gratitude for the people who brought them here, who shaped them, encouraged them, and cheered them on every step of the way. They carry love for those who are no longer with them, especially Cam's dad, whose presence continues to be felt in the stories, values, and traditions he passed down. None of it would have been possible without the love and support of their families and friends—and, in one particularly important instance, a dating app.
