We drove the 3 hours from Mountain View to Rachel's lab's cabin in Point Reyes for a romantic weekend away - only to find that they gave us the wrong key and we were locked out! After many frantic phone calls to try and find a backup key combined with lots of searching around the cabin for a hidden key or a fortuitously unlocked window, we were ready to give up. Suddenly, a moment of inspiration hit, and we figured out how to jimmy the lock on one of the doors. We were in! We then headed off for our kayak adventure. We met up with our wonderful guide, got suited up for our sea kayaks, and shoved off into the water! We kayaked throughout Tomales Bay, admiring birds, elks and seals while we waited for the sun to finally set. When the sun went down, the water came to life! Billions of bioluminescent phytoplankton lit up to share some of their stored daylight with us. We spent hours marveling at the brilliant illuminated patterns that our kayak paddles and splashes made in the bioluminescent waters. As fish darted around us, leaving behind glowing streaks in the dark water, Spencer realized that his kayak's rudder was broken! We would have to find a beach to come onto so that our guide could repair his kayak. As the guide repaired the kayak, Spencer suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. He pointed out how cloudy the night sky was and Rachel turned to look. When she turned back, he was down on one knee and asked, "will you marry me?" Rachel immediately responded, "fuck yes!" We kissed and got back into our now-working kayaks to paddle home. As we paddled back across the bay, the clouds that were hiding the brilliant night sky soon parted and we could see the whole of the Milky Way for almost the entirety of our paddle back. It added one final magical moment to what was the most perfect night any person could ask for.
