Rachael spent the summer of 2019 playing softball in a league with friends. Jamie and his friends would come to watch every Wednesday. When the season ended a mutual friend told Jamie that their catcher thought he was cute. At the end of the game Jamie went up to Rachael, confident on the outside but nervous on the inside. He stumbled over his thoughts as she typed on her phone. He meant to ask a question but instead shared his simple observation that she had a phone. He then asked if that phone had a number cause you can never be sure. She told him that he could have her number and chuckled. So softball had ended but an amazing relationship was about to blossom in the fall.
For weeks Jamie had been working on making the perfect engagement ring for Rachael. He tried his best to ask important questions nonchalantly. However Rachael had her hunches. Once the ring had finally been finished it was difficult for Jamie to contain his excitement. He planned for warmer weather but couldn't hold out any longer. On a breezy yet beautifully bright January afternoon Jamie took Rachael out to Scharr's Bluff in Hastings. A place they had been before when Jamie surprised Rachael with a picnic. So the sentimental scene was set. And as Rachael looked out over the bluffs at the frozen river Jamie found his moment and dropped to one knee. Rachael turned around with a smile already beaming across her face. The speech Jamie planned spilled from his ears and he said simply, "I love you more than anything and I want us to be together forever." Rachael was not hesitant in the least when she said yes. She then asked him to repeat what he said because she blacked out. They laughed and hugged and both agreed it was time to get out of the freezing wind.
