We met in October 2018 at the Langham, where I (Rachael) had just started a new role—laser-focused, career-driven, and completely uninterested in any workplace distractions. Diego, of course, had other plans. He sat right behind me in the office, working in the Stewarding Department, and wore what I jokingly called a “lab coat.” (It was really just a white overcoat, but I maintain it added mystery.) From day one, he was chatty—he’ll deny it, but he was full of questions about my weekend, my friends, my life. I thought he was just being friendly. He says he was being strategic. Diego swears he wasn’t trying that hard—just making conversation—but I remember the persistence. I, meanwhile, was trying to keep things professional and avoid any hint of a workplace romance. But then he got promoted to Banquets and showed up in a suit. That definitely caught my attention. One day he asked me to grab coffee. I wasn’t sure what to make of it—was it a date? Was he just being nice? Was he gay? (Ambiguous coffee invites are tricky!) I initially said no and chose a networking event over caffeine with him, but he didn’t let that stop him. He asked again. This time, I said yes. That coffee date turned into something more than either of us expected. Turns out, he wasn’t just being friendly, and I wasn’t as uninterested as I thought. Six years later, we’re still laughing, still choosing each other, and we can’t wait to celebrate this next chapter with all of you.
