When I offered to teach Quincy to drive a stick shift, I didn’t realize we were writing the prologue to our relationship. Quincy was a natural, as she moved into first gear without stalling on her first attempt, and before we knew it, we were driving on the open roads of Oahu with the windows down and no A/C. What was originally supposed to be a few nights in various parking lots turned into summers at Lake Coeur d’Alene, passport stamps from four continents, and watching The Grinch every Christmas—twice. Little did we know that those late nights as freshmen in college, grinding through the gears of a car older than we were, would lead us to where we are now. In the last four years, we have learned that our relationship works a bit like driving a stick shift. At times, we have had to downshift in order to navigate the narrow turns of balancing an education with full-time jobs. At other times, we have had to throw it into fifth gear and accelerate towards opportunities, such as traveling and moving in together. Now, as we enter a new chapter in our lives, we will work hard through the uphills that are presented to us while we savor the downhills the road allows to coast through.
