Their story began at Grand Valley State University, where they resided across the hall from each other in the Stafford dorms. Nate's first impression of Sarah was a simple "she's cute," while Sarah saw Nate as the guy who conducted questionable science experiments in his dorm room. Their first interactions are a bit hazy, but one early memory stands out vividly: an incident involving smoking hookah outside the dorms and a run-in with the resident assistant. After their freshman year, life took them on separate paths. Nate pursued a career at DOW Chemical, while Sarah found her footing at Haworth. However, fate intervened when Nate moved back to Grand Rapids to work in heart research at Spectrum Health (now Corewell Health). After a slight detour involving Nate going on a date with Sarah's friend, Jen, chance encounters at bootcamp classes brought them back together. After reconnecting, they spent more time together, with Jen even joining them on what Nate considered their first date. Sarah later realized what was going on and that she too liked Nate. They ended up going on a real date on September 6, 2017 - and many more after that! Navigating through the challenges of 2020, including the upheaval caused by the pandemic and living together, tested their relationship. But they emerged from it stronger, with a deeper bond and a clearer vision of their future together. Amidst the chaos, they shared some memorable moments. Sarah even took on the role of amateur hairstylist, giving Nate a lockdown haircut with beard trimmers. They also found solace in enjoying drinks at Bob’s bar with friends and family (and Nova) while it was closed down, turning the lockdown into an unexpected bonding experience. Nate surprised Sarah with a proposal in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on December 12, 2023. After a romantic dinner, he initially attempted to propose during a walk, but Sarah resisted due to the cold weather. In the car, he playfully tossed the ring at her, catching her completely off guard. Later, as they strolled by the river, he formally proposed, and she happily said yes.
