Emma was walking out of the HUB-Robeson Student Center at Penn State with a Venti Vanilla Iced Latte from Starbucks, listening to music through her headphones. Andrew was speed walking to his class in the Thomas Building, across the street from the Student Center. They bumped into each other, causing Emma to drop her source of energy, promptly ruining her day. Andrew, realizing he just crushed this girl’s spirit, offered to buy her a new drink. She agreed and they chatted while standing in line. They exchanged phone numbers and agreed to get coffee together at some point. Just kidding, they met on a dating app.
Andy wanted to meet Emma for a formal date for weeks after they connected, but Emma was too busy with THON Weekend approaching to worry about going on a date. Eventually, Emma agreed to go out with Andy the week after THON had concluded. Emma met Andy at Champs Downtown, a sportsbar on Allen Street in State College. They had a couple drinks and ate dinner at the bar and chatted about their families and interests (any shock that Andy talked about football 75% of the time?) Even though she was practically shaking from nerves, Emma had the guts to steal a french fry off of Andy’s plate. Andy admits now that he was a little upset by this but knew Emma wasn’t afraid to be herself from the get-go. From Champs, they walked to the Bryce Jordan Center to attend a Luke Bryan concert. They sat in the stands, chatted, and sang along to all the lyrics. In the middle of the concert, Emma started to sneeze, cough, and form a sore throat out of nowhere. As they walked back downtown after the concert ended, Emma continued to feel worse and worse, and Andy started to become concerned. He offered to walk her home, but she invited him to stay and watch TV and hang out with her housemate’s dog, Daisy. They ordered Insomnia Cookies and watched Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives until 2 in the morning, and fell asleep on the couch. The rest is history.
Andrew had a golf tee time scheduled for that morning at Toftrees Golf Course with some friends. He asked Emma if she would like to get lunch at The Field restaurant, which happened to be the location of their second date while they were in college. After lunch, they drove to Penn State, parked their car near the Berkey Creamery, and started to walk towards the Bryce Jordan Center. Once they arrived in front of will call, Andrew stopped, got down on one knee, and asked Emma to marry him. The ring nearly fell out of the box once he opened it!! After Emma said yes, they discovered a couple walking their dog was taking photos of the proposal. The couple approached Andrew and Emma and were nice enough to send Emma the pictures they had snapped. As they walked back to their car, Emma facetimed her father Doug, her mother Nancy, and brother Eric. The newly engaged couple then stopped at the Creamery again to get some ice cream and talk about how excited they were to start their new chapter!
