Flash back to August 25, 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act, creating the National Park Service (NPS). His vision was to preserve the beauty and history of America for generations. Little did he know, the parks would someday connect not just landscapes and histories, but hearts as well. Fast forward to July 4, 1976, America’s bicentennial. Amid fireworks and celebration, President Gerald Ford established Valley Forge National Historical Park, forever preserving the site where George Washington’s army endured a winter of trials and triumphs. Decades later, in July 2022, another kind of spark was ignited at this very site. Alli, far from her Virginian roots and stationed at Valley Forge for a seasonal role, found herself immersed in history and museum collections. Zack, a proud Pennsylvanian steeped in his state's rich past, shared her passion for preserving the past, outdoors, and, of course, a good pun. What began as conversations about history turned into shared adventures from Virginia to Pennsylvania, and beyond. From the rolling hills of Valley Forge to other national treasures, each park Alli worked at or they visited together, became a chapter in their story. From nightly phone conversations to hours long trips to explore new places, the National Parks symbolized not only their shared interests of history and the outdoors, but also the foundation of their growing love. Despite Alli having moved to two other states (NJ and MA) and three other parks, they built a life shaped by history, connected by the actions of men long past, and fueled by their own commitment to preserving and cherishing the stories of the land—and each other. Fun Fact: Valley Forge NHP is the only unit within the NPS to have its birthday on July 4th!
