Question

I'm interested in wearing an Indian outfit... where do I start?

Answer

We’re so excited to celebrate with you! Indian weddings are colorful and vibrant – that includes the outfits! If you want to wear an Indian outfit, this guide has you covered. What colors should I avoid? Avoid red for the wedding ceremony (this is typically reserved for the bride) Avoid white or black (these are associated with mourning in many Indian contexts) What are the types of Indian outfits for feminine presenting people? 1. Lehenga A popular and easy option! This is a three-piece outfit consisting of a skirt, blouse that is like a crop top(choli), and a scarf (dupatta). It’s comfortable and perfect for dancing. 2. Salwar Kameez / Anarkali A tunic-style top paired with either pants or a flowing skirt, plus a scarf. This is one of the most comfortable and versatile options. 3. Saree (Sari) A long, elegant piece of fabric (usually 5–9 yards) that is draped around the body with a fitted blouse and skirt. Sarees are beautiful but can be tricky to drape, so this option is not recommended to beginners. What are the types of Indian outfits for masculine presenting people? Oftentimes, men going to an Indian wedding will simply wear Western style clothing – think your typical suit that you would wear to an American wedding. But if you’re a masculine presenting person who would like to wear Indian formal wear – below are your options! 1. Kurta Pajama A long tunic (kurta) worn over fitted pants. This is simple, comfortable, and perfect for any event. 2. Sherwani A more formal, structured version of a kurta—similar to a long coat—often worn for the main ceremony. Great if you want a more dressed-up look. 3. Nehru Jacket / Bandhgala A structured vest or suit-style jacket often worn over a kurta or shirt. Great for slightly dressier events without wearing a sherwani. Where can I buy Indian clothing from? Online: Lashkaraa, Utsav Fashion Aza Fashions, CBazaar, Kalki Fashion If you’re near a major city, look for Indian clothing boutiques.
