How We Met

From Friend to Fiancé

Haley and Kyle met the first weekend of their freshman year at the University of Richmond. Haley ran cross country and track while Kyle played baseball, so their paths quickly began to cross and their friend group soon formed. One night before Thanksgiving break of their freshman year, Kyle quizzed Haley on her knowledge of sports. Thankfully she knew Russell Wilson played for the Seattle Seahawks, and they began to spend more time together. But as their schedules became busy with track and baseball, Haley decided she wanted to just maintain their friendship (what Kyle lovingly refers to as "the friend zone.") Fast forward to sophomore year. Kyle and his roommate/teammate Brendan were having lunch prior to Thanksgiving break (yes, there is a pattern here), when Brendan asked him what the deal was. Kyle told Brendan, "at some point before we are out of school, I will date Haley." Shortly thereafter, Haley and Kyle finally decided it was time to give it a real shot - and the rest is history.

The Proposal

March 5, 2022

Kyle and Haley had been living together in Philadelphia for a few months before Kyle decided it was time to pop the question. Kyle told Haley that they were going to meet his parents at a new brewery downtown to watch the Big East basketball tournament. Kyle and Haley planned to walk along one of their favorite routes near the Philly Art Museum before meeting Sue and Bob at the brewery. Haley was uncharacteristically running late as Kyle remained as cool as the aloe that he needs to cool down his summer sunburns. As they began their walk to the brewery, Haley's competitive nature came out and she tried to track their time and distance ... but little did she know Kyle was planning to leisurely take them along the scenic route and never get to the brewery. They made their way to the top of the Art Museum steps (aka the "Rocky Steps") when Kyle decided that he needed a photo of the Philly skyline. Haley was impatiently trying to hustle him along, worried to keep Sue and Bob waiting. Suddenly Kyle started the speech but it took Haley a moment to register that he was giving THE speech. As Kyle dropped to one knee and Haley said yes, surrounding strangers started cheering. Thinking they were all just random people, Haley turned around to find both of their families running up the steps to share the excitement of their day, which could not have been more perfect. To this day, we don't know what surprised Haley more - the amount of planning Kyle did or the actual proposal itself.
