The MagarMaati Ritual

9:00 am - 10:00 am

The Magarmaati Ritual: Blessing the Union with Mother Earth The Magarmaati (or Magar Maati) ritual is a beautiful, centuries-old Hindu tradition, that symbolically grounds the upcoming marriage in the earth's bounty and blessing. Revering Mother Earth (Maati) as a provider of sustenance and wealth, this ceremony is a heartfelt request for a prosperous and happy future for the couple. Day before the wedding, women from the bride's and groom's families undertake a ceremonial procession to a sacred outdoor location. Accompanied by music and the singing of traditional wedding folk songs (Mangal Geet), they gently collect sacred soil using a spade. This blessed earth is then brought back to the home. The sacred soil collected during the Magarmaati is essential to the final preparations—it is often used to construct the havan (sacrificial fire pit), ensuring an auspicious and blessed beginning to the marital journey.

The "Mandap Pooja and Ancenstor Invitation"

10:00 am - 11:30 am

Before the main ceremony begins, two profound rituals ensure the marriage is supported by both the divine and the family's history. The Mandap Puja transforms the ceremonial altar into a sacred space, invoking deities like Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles, and Agni, the fire god, to witness the vows. The four pillars of the mandap symbolically represent the foundational support of the parents for the couple's journey. Simultaneously, the Ancestor Invitation (Pitri Puja) ritual honors the couple's lineage, where prayers and offerings are made to the deceased family members. This beautiful act acknowledges that the wedding is a union of generations, securing the blessings and protection of the ancestors to ensure the newlyweds start their lifelong journey with grace and an auspicious beginning.
