Yes! The seaside city of Cartagena is one of the safest places in the entire country, as well as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Colombia. You will stay safe in the city as long as you use common sense and exercise normal precautions!

The currency in Colombia is Colombian Pesos (COP). To determine how much something costs in Colombia, you can divide the cost by the day's exchange rate. You can find the exchange rate by simply googling "1 USD to COP." For example, today's exchange rate is 4,153. So if I'm in Colombia and I want to know how much a $41,000-COP meal will be in US dollars, I'd divide it by 4,153 and get $9.87 Almost everywhere in Colombia accepts credit cards as a form of payment; however, we recommend exchanging some money into pesos (at a local bank in the US to save yourself from paying high exchange rates at the airport/in Colombia) for things like souvenirs, snacks, and taxis!
Cartagena is a small and very walkable historic town. You will not need to rent a car. Ubers and taxis are very easily accessible. If using a taxi, please confirm with the driver how much it will cost beforehand! We usually use Uber for ease and not having to negotiate with the drivers!
For as beautiful as Cartagena is, it is equally HOT & HUMID! Ladies, keep this in mind when picking your attire and hairstyle. Gentlemen, bring extra shirts to change into at night after sweaty days!
Street vendors can be very persistent so if you do not want a souvenir, simply keep walking and say "no gracias." If you encounter one of the rapping groups and you do not plan on tipping them, walk away!! They are harmless, but they might try to get some pesos from you if they rap for you. Just simply walk away and say "no gracias."
