Matt and Megan met at Redeemer Presbyterian Church post-service Coffee Hour in December 2016. Matt will tell you he had a love-at-first-sight type of moment; Megan did not. In fact, all Megan remembers is Matt locking eyes on her and listening intently as she shared, "Hi, I'm Megan Phelps, no relation to Michael." Matt had a friend in town at the time (Reid), who walked away from the interaction saying, "Dude, you gotta ask that Megan girl out." Matt was already scheming. Weeks went by, and when Matt didn't see Megan at Coffee Hour, the modern-day Shakespeare sent her a message over Facebook requesting to, "treat her to dinner." Long story short, after a few dates Megan decided Matt was too perfect and handsome to date, so they stopped. Although not dating, a friendship sparked as Matt and Megan found themselves in the same friend group at Redeemer's newly launched site in Lincoln Square - a church Matt only attended because Megan invited him. Over the course of a year, Matt and Megan grew closer by God's sweet grace. When Megan showed up unannounced to Matt's soccer game and birthday party in early March 2018, Matt knew he needed to ask her out again. On March 18, Matt and Megan went to brunch for what they now call, "2.1" (round two, date one). Things aligned perfectly this time and by March 23, Matt and Megan were officially a couple.
Matt proposed to Megan at her favorite spot in the city: outside of Brookfield Place, along the Hudson River on September 20, 2018. He did so involving the thing Megan values most, community. Matt gathered individuals who had spiritually spoken into their relationship since they started dating (2.0). Matt walked Megan up the Hudson River so they could "randomly" run into these friends and loved ones. After speaking with seven people, each of whom complimented Megan, Matt popped the question. The night finished with a celebration at The Beekman Hotel, very close to where Matt and Megan will be getting married.
