On a snowy evening in December 2020, Peter and Thuy met over a bowl of hot ramen at a restaurant in McLean, VA—each having swiped right on a dating app. It was on this first date that Thuy shared some rather unconventional news; one that you usually wouldn't hear on a first encounter. She told Peter that she would be moving to Germany in the coming months and asked him how he felt about it. Understanding that Germany was far–4,094 miles to be exact—he smiled and congratulated her. He told her that she was fortunate as it was one of his own, life-long dreams to travel and work abroad... and said that she should be proud of her decision. With no expectations and not knowing what would become of the relationship, Peter then said, “Let’s take it one day at a time.” Thuy and Peter eventually became boyfriend and girlfriend whilst taking Peter's "one day at a time" approach to heart. Flash forward to a year later, Thuy's relocation to Germany got delayed which gave them both time to get to know each other and inevitably, fall in love. On February 22, 2022, amongst a flurry of snow in Alberta, Canada -- reminiscent of their first date -- Peter got down on one knee and proposed. So, because of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, a dating app, and a willingness to try, Thuy and Peter both found love and a new, lifelong partner to share adventures with.
