I walked into Juicy Restaurant located in the Liguanea Plaza on a warm Saturday afternoon, expecting nothing more than quick meals after a long day running grocery shopping errands at the Hi-Lo supermarket accompanied with Kimani, a real honest true-friend and a young brother to me. The place was small, crowded, and alive with the sound of sizzling hot food, ringing phones, and impatient customers waiting for their orders. Then I saw her. I said to myself “no I can’t believe my eye, who is this beautiful woman? She stood in front of me making her orders with confidence and attitude. She wasn’t trying to impress anyone. She had a serious face, quick responses, and carried herself like someone who had no time for foolishness. When I first tried to start a conversation, she barely looked up. “What can I get for you?” she asked coldly. I smiled. “Maybe your number so we can get together at a better time.” She rolled her eyes at me. But anyways, “I will take care of both orders, in a firm voice to the cashier. “Sherine handed my receipt to me and said; “you don’t give up”, “I responded, “I don’t give up on a challenge!” Most men would have given up right there, but I couldn’t stop thinking about her. There was something about her toughness, her confidence, and the way she refused to entertain me that made me even more interested. So I kept coming back asking for her number but eventual she wrote it on my receipt. Maybe, we can get together later or another time to have lunch or dinner, she said no, I had final exams next week and I had to study, I said, okay fair enough but I will still call and checkup on you, and the first time I saw that beautiful smile I know that there is an Angel behind that shield of cover that kept her single and in church for all these years. At first, Sherine thought I was just another smooth talker. Every phone call, I would try to make her laugh, compliment her, or start a small conversation. Every time, she resisted me.
