How we met

9/21/18

It's the oldest story in the world. Neither of us had ever been skydiving before, and there we were... Peter had only recently relocated to Baltimore from the UK. Jo had joined Tinder for the first time after years of disappointing experiences on various dating apps. Just one swipe. That's all it took. A few days later, they met for their first date. In the immortal words of Earth Wind and Fire, Do you remember the 21st night of September? Jo and Peter do. 'Twas the night of their magical first date. Drinks at Spirits of Mount Vernon, served up by Jo's cousin Paul and spied on by Maid of Honor extraordinaire Allison. The easy flow of conversation led naturally to dinner. The Helmand was a deliciously obliging spot. A stroll around the Washington Monument in Baltimore's Mount Vernon Place, a first kiss. Let the record show that Peter kissed Jo first. Jo went 90%.

The Proposal

7/31/19

Jo's version: I was on vacation with my entire family in the Outer Banks. All week people had been asking why Peter hadn't come along, but it was no big deal - he had a long vacation with his son Toby coming up, so I knew he couldn't swing it. That day, Mom woke me up from a nap to go run some errands. We drove 40 minutes roundtrip for tonic water. Totally normal. When we got back, mom looked at her phone and said that everyone was having drinks down at the ocean. Totally normal. As I was slogging over the dunes, something deep in my subconscious told me that something was going down. As I came up over the final rise, a lump rose in my throat. There was Peter, standing in the middle of a beach blanket, surrounded by my entire family. John Denver's Annie's Song was playing over a bluetooth speaker. Wiping tears away, I walked across the sand. He took my hands, knelt down, and asked me to be his wife. I sobbed my response. The fam popped the champagne. Paul Simon's Call Me Al came on the speaker. Just perfect. Peter's version: It all started several months earlier. I was thinking of when the best time to propose to Jo would be, but couldn't decide on exactly how. The one thing I did know was that to make the moment perfect for Jo, I would need to have as many of her family members there as possible. I had told Jo and anyone that asked that there was no way I could go to the Outer Banks, as I was travelling to the UK the following week to get Toby. The plan was for me to arrive on the Thursday and propose on the Friday, but I managed to leave work on Wednesday instead. I was about an hour away when Allison phoned and suggested I propose when I arrived. I agreed, so as I got closer, Jo was whisked away for ice and I left my car out of sight and made my way to the beach to await my bride to be, surrounded by my future family! It was only 5 minutes later that Jo came over the dune and met me on the blanket, where I stumbled through my proposal and she sobbed yes!
