Claire and Peter met when they were on the same baseball team in elementary school. They then went on to have many classes together in highschool and eventually they went to prom together and have been together ever since. Claire went to college while Peter finished up high school, for the first few years they did long distance while at different colleges and Peter served in the Minnesota Army National Guard. During this time they spent summers together, as many weekends as possible, FaceTimed whenever possible, and played video games together online. During the COVID shutdown they spent as much time together as possible before Peter was deployed to serve overseas for about a year. Upon his return they moved to Illinois together to pursue Claire’s career.

While on the Olson family vacation at lake Kabetogama Peter insisted upon taking Claire on a boat ride in the choppy water "to go fishing", Claire was immediately annoyed due to the weather and the lack of pliers. She proceeded to search through the tackle box that contained the engagement ring in it and some how did not see it in there. On the way to the fishing spot Peter was sure to find some waves to drive through and get Claire soaking wet. Upon the arrival of the fishing spot, Grassy Point, Peter asked Claire which lure he should use Claire turned away and was surprised to see an engagement ring and no lure when she looked back. She said yes, they went back to shore to share the news with Claire's family, and Facetimed Peter's parents and brothers Jacob and Nathan, and all of the grandparents and aunts and uncles.
