The Proposal

On the seventeenth day of August, in the year two thousand and twenty-four, Paul led Lauren upon a romantic journey to the gentle hills of Paso Robles. This quest he planned alone, in secret and with great care—a feat all the more remarkable, for Paul was not known among his people as a planner of travels. Thus, Lauren did suspect that some purpose lay hidden upon the road. The path before them was rich with promise: a day of wine drawn from storied vines, a visit to an ancient olive grove beloved by Lauren above many foods, and—should destiny grant a favorable answer—a feast both romantic and exceedingly delicious. Their lodging was a charming AirBNB, watched over by small horned guardians, the mini goats, whose cuteness rivaled even the Shire’s finest livestock. After a swift tasting of what wine could be had, Paul and Lauren came at last to the olive farm—a peaceful realm of sunlit trees and quiet earth. There they were granted an intimate tour of the land, and when the olives were brought forth to be tasted, the hour long foreseen at last arrived. With courage gathered and nerves laid bare, Paul spoke—though the words themselves are now lost to him, carried away on the winds of memory. But the meaning was clear: Lauren heard, hope answered hope, and when they departed that gentle place, she bore upon her hand a ring, bright and true, and upon her face a smile that told the tale more plainly than any song. Thus ended the quest, not with perfect plans, but with a faithful heart—and so began a fellowship of two, bound for all the roads yet to come.
