We had a handful of mutual friends and had heard a lot of stories about each other over the years. And though there were a dozen near-miss opportunities, our paths crossed only once at a Rage Against the Machine cover band show where we briefly exchanged introductions over a noisy bar. Fast forward years later to that early stage of the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home and living online. Now sprinkle in some heartache and unemployment and it was the perfect recipe to finally make a connection. Paul posted a video where he sang about feeling anxious that he couldn’t “go to Target for no reason” anymore. This, as I'm sure was true for many people, deeply resonated with me.. and also made me laugh. It took one comment to break the ice and we spent the next several weeks sharing stories and music and all the stupid things on the internet that we love. Paul was born and raised in Sacramento but was living in Salt Lake City at the time. When he came home to visit, we officially met and the connection was effortless. That summer, I got to spend time with Paul’s beautiful children, Christian and Lucy. Seeing their sweet and silly family dynamic melted my heart. We fell in love and quarantined happily ever after.
