Fate has a funny way of bringing two people together, even when they’re stationed hundreds of miles apart. Paula was serving in New Mexico, and Shaynne was stationed in Kentucky when her unit reached out for extra help in one of their shops. His Guard unit was contacted, and by complete chance or maybe a little destiny, they shared a mutual friend who had deployed with him. Before long, Shaynne was TDY to the same base where Paula worked as the flight secretary, her office just a few steps away from the warehouse where he’d spend most of his days. Before either of them realized it, their paths began to cross more and more. One evening, Paula’s friend group decided to take a trip to Las Cruces and invited a few others along, including the quiet, reserved newcomer named Shaynne. He was shy and hesitant to dance, so Paula and her friends came up with a playful little plan pretending one of them was hurt just to coax him onto the dance floor. It worked, and once he was out there, his guard dropped, and that night sparked the beginning of something special. What started as easy friendship soon turned into late-night laughs, shared routines, and a bond that grew naturally. They spent more and more time together, insisting it was just platonic, but everyone around them could see the spark forming. It wasn’t until Shaynne went on a short leave for a guys’ trip that Paula realized just how much she missed him. One slightly tipsy phone call later, she asked the question that changed everything: “Do you like me?” After some stuttering, a nervous laugh, and a heartfelt yes, he asked if that meant she liked him too, to which she simply replied, “Duh.” From that moment on, it was official: two people from two different bases, brought together by chance, realizing they had found something worth holding onto.
