Maddie had been working at the Avera Heart Hospital for a little over 2 years when Paul started as a nurse in the Cath Lab. They had passed each other in the hallway dozens of times, but it wasn't until a few months later when a dear friend and coworker of theirs thought it would be a good idea to set them up together. It started with exchanging a few messages back & forth and a couple of nervous, blushing encounters at the hospital, then Paul asked Maddie on their first date. The two went to Vinyl Taco for dinner and then Maddie kicked Paul's ass with her bowling game. Paul and Maddie discussed later how there was just something different about that night, unlike any other first date they had experienced before. The two have been inseparable ever since. And Paul has yet to redeem himself in bowling.

Maddie always joked with Paul that there was no way he could pull off a proposal without her anticipating it coming. Somehow Paul managed to do just that though. On October 11th, 2020 Paul asked Maddie to be his partner for life. The two were leaving church that evening when Paul asked if Maddie wanted to go for a walk in downtown Sioux Falls (which was not unusual for the couple). Earlier that day, Maddie had taken an important exam so she was ready for a little break and a walk outside sounded like the perfect stress relief. Maddie wasn't suspicious of a proposal at all since she didn't think Paul even had a ring picked out yet! The two parked downtown and started walking towards Falls Park. The sky looked beautiful that night, so the two stopped in a secluded spot towards the top of the falls to take the beautiful view in. They talked for a little while until a short period of silence followed. Then Paul began to tell Maddie he had an important question for her. He got down on one knee and pulled the ring out of his pocket and the rest is history! After sharing the exciting news with family and friends, the two later admitted to each other that Maddie blacked-out and can't remember Paul's proposal speech and Paul was so nervous he didn't hear any of the message given at church! Regardless, it was the most perfect moment shared between the two of them and a moment they'll both remember for years to come.
