It was going to be an unusually warm Saturday in mid December, so Patrick planned a hike on a nearby trail with friends Josh and Ayesha. He insisted that it would be the perfect opportunity to take a family portrait with their dog, Lexi. Abbie was a little suspicious with how persistent Patrick was because she knew he was never one to suggest planning a day around taking pictures. That morning Patrick packed the bag with all the essentials and they drove to meet Josh and Ayesha. Lexi led the way on the hike, followed by Patrick and Josh then by Abbie and Ayesha. During the hike, Abbie noticed a suspicious outline of a box, but after a few thoughts rushed to her head, she rationalized that it was just the corner of the Tupperware container that the PB&Js were in. Little did she know, Josh and Ayesha had been clued in for about a month. By the time everyone reached the top, Patrick was ready to stage the perfect proposal, but Abbie was more concerned with lunch. After a few photos were taken, Patrick began fiddling in his pocket and then dropped to a knee.
We first met in high school at the end of our Junior year. We were instantly drawn to each other, but perhaps each a bit shy (or clueless in Patrick's case). We would occasionally cross paths and catch up, but Abbie kept waiting for Patrick to make the first move. Finally, Abbie made the first move. From there, we spent the entire summer before college together before we went our separate ways. Abbie left for Kent State to play field hockey and Patrick went down the road to UK. Despite the distance, we kept in touch. Whenever things got tough, we leaned upon one another. After a few months, we decided that we would try to make the distance work. Through all the highs and lows, we were always there for each other.
