We decided to go on a winter hike one weekend because we both had good winter gear finally after being in Colorado for a few years. We went on a hike that we had done 2 years prior, when we were much less prepared. It is called Emerald Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park. The first time we did this hike, we were slipping and sliding everywhere in the snow but laughing and enjoying every second of it. This time we had micro spikes, giving us a much better chance against the icy hills! Once we made it to the lake, we took several photos of the beautiful mountains and hung out for a second to take it all in. It was sooooo windy up there. At one point, I turned around to see Patrick fumbling with something in his pocket, but I just figured he was putting his phone away after taking photos and with snow gloves on in high wind, that’s no easy task. (He was actually making the decision to not propose at the top lake and risk losing the ring in that wind!) He then said “Let’s go back down to the other lake where it’s less windy and we can chill there.” So back down we went. We saw a back country skier coming down the mountain and I watched him slalom his way down through the trees and across the frozen lake. I turned around to Pat and said “That’s awesome!” Only to find him on one knee. I shouted, “I knew it!” but I didn’t actually. He gave his beautiful speech, I said yes, strangers congratulated us and took our photo, and we headed back out of the hike as fiancés.
