His Version: The Day Everything Changed July 5th, 2024, was a beautiful Friday afternoon. I left work early to meet a friend for drinks at Bliss Restaurant in North County St. Louis. I walked in with no expectations—just a single man enjoying the moment. At the time, I had no idea that this ordinary Friday would turn into one of the most important days of my life. Inside, the energy was good. It was lively but not overwhelming—people laughing, music playing, conversations flowing. I linked up with my friends, grabbed a drink, and settled into the moment. For about an hour, I was just doing what you do—catching up, joking, enjoying the company, and letting the week roll off my shoulders. Across the room, I noticed someone familiar—one of my son’s former basketball teammate’s parents. It had been a few years since I’d seen him, so I figured I’d go over and reconnect. You know how that goes—talk about the kids, how life’s been, what’s new, what’s changed. What I didn’t realize at the time was that my path to that quick conversation would take me right past a table that would change everything. Tricia was already there, sitting with a close friend who was in town visiting for the holiday. Of course, I didn’t know any of that yet. To me, she was just another face in the room—at least at first. I made my way over to my guy, and we did what men do—dap each other up, laugh, and jump right into catching up like no time had passed. We talked about the kids, life, and everything in between. It felt good to reconnect. Then, out of nowhere, as we’re standing there wrapping up our conversation, I hear a voice (Tricia) come from over my right shoulder. Loud enough to cut through everything. “GOOD! Y’all can get from all behind my head!” I paused for a second, slightly confused. But completely amused and smiling. Now, from my perspective, I wasn’t even close to being “behind her head.” I was at least two to three arm-lengths away. So, I didn’t quite understand where that was coming from—but the way she said it, with confidence and a smile, caught my attention. As I turned to walk away, I realized I had to pass by that same table again. And right on cue, she said it again: “I’m glad you can get from all behind my head.” At that point, I couldn’t just walk past like nothing happened. So, I stopped and said, respectfully, “My bad, excuse me. I didn’t realize I was in your space.” Still smiling, still trying to make sense of her energy. But what happened next completely threw me off—in the best way. As I started to walk away, she called out again: “Hey… were you locked up? Did you just get out? Because I know everybody, and I’ve never seen you before.” Now that? That was a first. I turned back, laughing, and said, “Locked up? You mean jail?” She said, without hesitation, “Yeah. I know everybody, and I’ve never seen you before.” At that moment, I couldn’t help but admire her boldness. Most people play it safe when they meet someone new—but not her. She came straight out with it, no filter, no hesitation. I said, “No, I’ve never been to jail… but I was married for 16 years, so I was inside. Just not the penitentiary.” That got a smile out of her. And when she smiled, I really saw her. There was something about her—her confidence, her humor, her presence. She stood out in a way that was hard to ignore. And whether she realized it or not, she had already gotten my attention. So, I made a move I don’t normally make... Something about her stood out. So, I walked back, handed her my phone, and told her to put her name and number in it. She did. From that moment on, she had my attention. We exchanged drinks, smiles, and energy across the room. No one else mattered. What started as a random Friday turned into something unforgettable. The rest is history. Her Version: He was definitely all behind my head Of Course I stood out and it was love at first sight The End!
