I had recently started a new job in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Toledo Hospital and I was orienting on nightshift. One night I had a very sick patient and I was walking quickly to the supply room. We all know that when I am focused, I am focused. So, as I was walking to the supply room I passed someone on the way. Just as I had passed this person I heard them say "hi." I quickly looked back and said “hello” back but just thought it was a genuine "hi" in passing. I was clueless. Needless to say it was Bill. Later that night Elisea O'Donnell (my preceptor) suggested that I sit down and try and get caught up with my charting. As I was charting, I glanced up as I was thinking and noticed that some guy was staring at me. So I refocused on the computer and continued my charting. About ten minutes or so passed and I looked up again and noticed that he was STILL looking at me. At this point I was like: what is going on? Why is he staring at me? Oh well, I just ignored it, finished charting and went back to patient care. Later that night things had finally slowed down and I was working on some more charting. Elisea came up to me (all awkward with her hands in her scrub pockets), and gave me a head nod and said, "Are you single?" Chika, another nurse on the unit, looked at her and said, "Did you just ask her if she's single?" Elisea quickly replied, "Shut up Chika, don't make this more awkward than it already is!" Elisea redirected her attention to me and now started to stutter, "No, no, no, I'm not asking for me." I giggled and said "Yes I am, but who is wanting to know?" Elisea said thank you and walked away!! She would not tell me. She just said think about it. Of which I was completely clueless. All the men in my unit were dating someone or married!! Then it hit me. Once I got home I had a Facebook friend request and a message from Bill. I was completely clueless.
This proposal developed over the course of maybe 6 months. I had decided Paige was the one so I started to develop a plan. I wracked my brain with ideas. I thought about romantic getaways, proposals on the beach at sunset, you know pretty much all the stereotypical ideas. I then decided to switch my approach. What would Paige want? Well, if you know Paige, you know she’s not the romantic type, so the beach and those ideas were out. I then decided to recruit a few friends to go on a weekend adventure to Silver Lake Sand Dunes. My plan was to investigate the idea of her and I taking a weekend getaway in “Paige’s” Jeep to the dunes. I would find the perfect spot to have a romantic moment at sunset on the dunes. Well, after a very fun weekend with friends at the dunes, I decided that idea was out. I needed an idea that Paige would never suspect. So how do you plan an engagement she wouldn’t suspect? Have her plan it! So we discussed hosting a summer party. One where all our friends would be gathered. It would include her out of town college friends she doesn’t get to see all that often. She won’t suspect a thing, and she didn’t. September 7th came and everyone showed up for the party. I had a long day of sweaty palms and my stomach was in knots. Needless to say I was a bit nervous. But it couldn’t have gone better. Bentley was included in the proposal and looked dapper with his black bowtie. The most important part of all is Paige said yes!! I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.
