Colleen and Pablo both got invited to a Halloween party hosted by mutual friend, Allie Dujmovic, in Washington, D.C. Colleen was coming from work and it was a last minute decision and ended up not dressing up. Pablo went as a convict with some questionable tattoos drawn on him with eye liner. A few words were exchanged and then the whole group continued their night dancing at the Mad Hatter, the classiest of establishments. Both Colleen and Pablo texted their mutual friend, Allie, the next day telling her about each other. Pablo then asked Colleen out to their first date at a local brewery to which they ended up closing down the bar.

Pablo and Colleen went on a 15-day trip to California that included four national parks, Napa Valley, San Francisco, driving down the Pacific Coast Highway, and Disneyland. Pablo carried the ring in his pocket or backpack every single day waiting for the perfect time. On the second anniversary of their first date, Pablo proposed at sunset overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur.
