In January of 2023, Olivia and Ian met in the office at World Relief, a non-profit for refugee services, in Chicago. They both served as managers; Olivia worked in grants and Ian was in employment services. The first time they saw each other, it was all smiles (big smiles). Ian, though, at 33 years old, kept it professional and tried not to come off as a creep. He was thinking Olivia was probably another 23-year-old college grad, like most of the female employees in the office. The next time that they talked, Olivia went up to his desk at the end of the day and asked him if he had ever used “Asana” (because he would be using it soon with her and his coworkers.) Unbeknownst to Ian, and all of the eavesdropping coworkers, “Asana” is a project management software used for collaboration across geographically separated offices - and not, as Ian and the others presumed - “a sauna.” Ian was…titillated but very confused…until a clued-in coworker intervened to explain why they were both looking at each other weirdly and everyone else in the office was giggling. They wouldn’t talk about that incident until about six months later when Ian announced he was leaving for a job in Georgia. Olivia reached out, hoping to see him before he left and commenting on how sad she was to hear the news. Ian responded that he was sad too, especially because she never took him to a sauna. Her message let him know that she was into him, so he asked her out to dinner (where he learned she was actually 29). It was the best first date they’d ever had in their lives. They continued to see each other through a couple of moves and a few jobs until they moved in together in Baltimore in December of 2023.
