The Escobars

Oscar and Kiara met in 2021, right in the middle of the COVID pandemic- though the story begins with a little help from Kiara’s college roommates. Special thanks go to Alessia and Grace, who decided (without Kiara’s knowledge) that it was time for her to start dating and secretly created a Bumble account for her. They had a very specific strategy while swiping through Cal Poly SLO bachelors: he had to be a Cal Poly student, no drugs, and at least somewhat religious. After reviewing profile after profile, they eventually swiped right on Oscar. When Kiara discovered the Bumble account that had been created on her behalf, she was not thrilled. But curiosity got the best of her, and she decided she might as well take a look at the potential matches. One profile caught her attention- Oscar’s. Kiara decided to humor the swipe and start a conversation. And the rest is history. While many of our parents might believe we met somewhere on campus, the truth is we actually met online. What started as a roommate-led experiment quickly turned into something much more meaningful. From that first swipe, Oscar and Kiara spent the rest of their Cal Poly years growing together, building a relationship that led them to this moment. Sometimes love just needs a little push from good friends- and a well-timed swipe.
