Our Story

One Chapter At A Time

Years ago, if you pulled up a chair and asked; “Eli, think about what life will be like at 34 and tell me all about it,” there’s not a doubt in my mind the narration would sound entirely different. It’s funny how we tend to pen the ending of our own stories when the true Author has entirely different plans. Flipping back to a historical chapter of my life, I first find mention of Charity as I noticed her walking into the sanctuary of my home church, Johnston City United Pentecostal Church. She was still then, and for some time to come, an unknown woman to me. In hindsight, I’m certain she was there for reasons other than Jesus; reasons most certainly resembling a promising young guitarist. But rightfully, we exchanged nothing more than a shared ignorance of each other’s existence. At that time, we were simply incompatible – living out separate chapters, walking different paths, and navigating lives that weren't yet ready to intertwine. But our stories were still being written. When I first took notice, the very first thing that struck me was how incredibly funny she was. Her niche, unique sense of humor vibed with mine oh too well. We spoke the same language right from the start. I often find myself turning back to re-read a chapter of my life when everything seemed so uncertain. One evening – one of the first times Charity and I made a quick pitstop at my house – she noticed my guitar hanging on the wall. She asked me to play her a tune, and I reluctantly agreed. We sat down on the couch, and I began plucking away at a questionable acoustic cover of one of my favorite love ballads. It was certainly a flawed performance, but as I looked up, I noticed something entirely flawless. Her beautiful eyes never left mine. And in that moment, it was as if the rest of the world had completely faded away; as if she and I were the only humans left on earth. And though I didn’t say it yet, it was in that quiet, profound moment, I knew I was entirely in love. A few amazing chapters later, as our two stories were progressively merging into one, I found myself longing to give Charity a proposal that suited our relationship perfectly. With much prayerful consideration, I planned a family photo shoot for Charity and my kids at a scenic spot in Giant City State Park. My brother was in on the plan, acting as our designated photographer. He and I had already scouted out the perfect location, talking through every detail. When the time came, I gave my brother a subtle nod. With the camera at the ready, I turned to Charity and got down on one knee. After taking a deep breath and soaking in the moment, I told her how much she meant to me and the kids, and how I would love nothing more than to build a life with her by my side. Through shared tears and unbreakable smiles, she said, “Are you sure??” Of course, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind. And our story is still being written. We are so incredibly grateful for how the true Author brought us full circle, and we cannot wait to celebrate the beginning of our next chapter with each of you.
