History buffs: Georgia's Rome has an abundance of Civil War history and heritage sites. Rome is one of the few towns that saw continuous action during all 4 years of the war, so Rome has reminders everywhere. Stop by the Rome/Floyd Visitor Center for a free full guide to the Civil War in Georgia's Rome.
Shaded trails for mountain biking and hiking. From the Visitor Center parking lot, the trail goes past the cannons on the hill, which are behind the old cabin and cotton gin. When the trail comes to a gravel road, keep an eye out for small orange flags on metal sticks, these mark where the trails enter the gravel roads before entering the woods again. Jackson Hill was the location of Fort Norton, an eathern fortification system, which defended Rome during The Civil War. The bike/hike trail was opened Fall of 2011. Cycle Therapy on Broad St built the trail and has a map of the trail system. Parking is available in the Rome-Floyd County Visitors Center parking lot.
Check out Ordinary Bicycles for your bike rentals to explore the Heritage Trail system around Rome. A limited number of comfort bike rentals are available for $5/hour or $25/day. A perfect way to take in the local scenery! Please call for a reservation as they really don't use their webpage.
Technically, River Ratz is closed for the season, but Mr. Rick Dempsey has said he'd be willing to arrange group kayak tours for us. He needs at least one week's advance notice as they are officially closed for the season over our wedding weekend and it must be a minimum of 8 kayaks, up to 20 kayaks at a time. What a beautiful way to see Rome! Talk to your friends and family and coordinate a fun outing on the river!
