Opus 40 is a monumental environmental sculpture rising out of an abandoned bluestone quarry at the foot of Overlook Mountain in Saugerties, New York. Extending over more than six acres, with thousands of tons of exquisitely laid dry stone walling, Opus 40 is one of the most extraordinary attractions in the Hudson Valley. Opus 40 Inc, founded in 1978 by Fite’s widow, Barbara, now comprises Opus 4o, Fite’s 6.5 acre sculpture, as well as 63 acres of meadows, forested quarry trails, and historic buildings like the Fite House, Fite’s home and original studio, and the Quarryman’s Museum, his homage to local quarrymen.
