On Airbnb's / Staying Longer in Hawai'i
If you are staying longer than the weekend, we recommend renting a car! A lot of the coolest things to do on the island require a bit of driving. If you're staying in Waikiki though, be wary about where you park; there are limited long-term or free spots. Ubers are not super plentiful outside of Waikiki, so if that's your home base, you're more likely to find an Uber out of town but will struggle to find one home. In terms of where to stay, Hawai'i recently passed legislation to minimize short term rentals on the island. This means that while Airbnb's/VRBO's still exist, they are a lot less cost effective than in other holiday destinations. It's a controversial regulation, but some rentals get around it through permitting one rental a month, so hosts typically prioritize longer stays. If you are going to stay for the entire week, Ollie and I find value in prioritizing rentals with kitchens so we can cook! That being said, rentals that have that feature and are at cost parity - if not a little more expensive - with hotels (for two people) in Waikiki/the North Shore are typically very small studio apartments. It is not easy to find larger, affordable houses for groups. We have negotiated excellent group rates and concessions for our guests at two great hotels in Waikiki to make this decision easier. Feel free to stay where you like, but we wanted to make sure you all had context when making your decision.
