Our Engagement
OHENEWAA: Sometimes life changes in a single moment. For us, it was April 29th, 2023. What began as a simple night out with friends became the start of something that would change our lives forever. There was an instant connection — one of those rare moments when the world just stops. He jokes it was love at first sight for me… but deep down, I think we both felt it. We spent the whole night talking, laughing, and feeling like we’d known each other forever. The next day, I was at a friend’s birthday brunch, planning to celebrate all day. But when Nana asked if I wanted to see him again, I hesitated — torn between staying with my friends or following my heart. They told me to go. Thank God they did. The moment I saw him again, I knew. We spent hours talking, wrapped in our own little world. Everything felt natural — easy. When he dropped me off later that evening, it already felt like something permanent had begun. In the weeks that followed, our lives blended effortlessly. I met his family during his sister’s graduation weekend. Shortly after, I invited him to church — where he met mine. It didn’t feel like we were just meeting families; it felt like our worlds were merging. On December 1st, 2023, he asked me to be his girlfriend. Exactly seven months later — July 1st, 2024 — he asked me to be his wife. Now, we celebrate the story that began on an ordinary night — and turned into something extraordinary. Not just as two people in love, but as two souls who found their way home. NANA: Sometimes, the most unexpected moments lead us to the most important people. I first saw Ohenewaa at a friend’s birthday party. There was great music, energy in the room—and there she was. Radiant. Unforgettable. I didn’t approach her. Not because I was shy—but because her presence made me pause. It wasn’t just attraction. It was awe. Months later, I was out with friends in DC when a buddy from out of town asked me to meet him in Maryland. I almost said no. The drive from Virginia was long, and I was ready to call it a night. But something nudged me to go. That small, inconvenient nudge changed everything. Because there she was again. Ohenewaa. Even more stunning than I remembered. She hadn’t seen me that first time, but this time? Our paths were meant to cross. She walked right up to me and asked, “Are you Ghanaian?” She gave me a smile that said, of course I already knew. That simple question sparked something instant and real. Conversation flowed effortlessly — like we’d known each other for years. There was laughter, curiosity, connection. It felt easy. True. At the end of the night, I walked her and her friend to their car. Then went home wondering, Who is this woman taking selfies with me on night one like she knows something I don’t? Meanwhile, she told her family she had met her future husband. For her, it was love at first sight. For me? Love at second sight — but I caught up quick. The next day, we talked again — and never stopped. We saw each other. Shared time. And every moment confirmed what we already knew: this was real. When she invited me to church that Sunday, I met her family — and was welcomed like one of their own. Since then, Sunday dinners have become tradition: love, laughter, and fufu. From that night on, life changed. It’s been full of grace, growth, and a love that surprises me daily with its depth. I often think about that one drive I almost didn’t take — and how it led me to the woman who would become my everything. And to think, it all started with one question, one smile, and a woman who basically said, “Hi, I’m your future.”
