For years, we were in the same town, even in the same line of work. I was with the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, and he trained with the K-9 unit there. Our worlds brushed close enough that we could have crossed paths at any moment, but we never did. Looking back, I like to think it was because fate was saving our meeting for the perfect time. Years later, I transferred to Clayton PD, where he was working as a patrol sergeant. One evening, after a long day of training, I pulled into the parking lot and saw him standing with his shift. As I passed by, he called out for me to come over. I hesitated for just a second, took a deep breath, turned around, and said, “Sure.” What started as a casual chat about my upcoming family vacation and other little things, felt surprisingly easy, like talking to someone I had known far longer than a few minutes. There was something in his presence that was steady, kind, and quietly magnetic. After I walked away, he came over and asked if he could call me. Our first phone conversation lasted only a few minutes, but in that short time, I felt something rare, a spark that was gentle but certain. So much so, I was walking bare foot in the grass in circles. He asked me out, and I said yes… only to cancel later. We rescheduled, and I told him I’d meet him there. But he had other plans. He told me exactly what time to be ready because he was picking me up himself. It was the first of many times he would show me that when he wanted something or someone, he would make sure it happened. When I think back to that night outside the station, I realize it wasn’t just luck that brought us together. It was timing, courage, and a quiet pull that neither of us could ignore. We may have missed each other for years, but when the moment finally came, we both knew, this was it.
