Question

What documents do we need to travel to Italy?

Answer

A government-issued passport is required. Please note that passports expiring within 6 months of travel cannot be used. Ensure all passports are renewed accordingly. Additionally, in 2025 the EU is requiring an ETIAS to visit European countries. ETIAS is an electronic system that allows visa-free travel for visitors from countries that don’t need a visa to enter the EU. The application isn’t open yet, but when it’s available, applicants will fill out an online application and pay a small fee of € 7. You’ll need to share personal information like your date of birth, parent’s names, and details about your current occupation and previous criminal convictions. You’ll also need to provide a valid passport that is good for at least three months. ETIAS says the application will be processed in seconds, and the decision will be sent to the applicant within four days. However, that could be longer if you’re asked for additional information or the application is denied, and you must appeal. To play it safe, apply at least a month in advance, if not longer.

The latter two are not as widely accepted, except in major cities and tourist hotspots. And it never hurts to have a little cash in euros in your wallet either, just in case.
