Every love story has its own unique twists and turns, and ours started in the hallways of Elkhorn High School. It all started senior year when Nyleigh transferred to Elkhorn, where she was the new girl navigating a sea of unfamiliar faces. That’s where she first crossed paths with Kyler. Sharing a few classes, they quickly discovered they had a lot in common—both were athletes (softball for her, baseball for him) and they eventually became part of the same friend group. But fate had other plans in mind before they could truly connect. At the time, Nyleigh was in a relationship and had no intention of complicating her life any further. It wasn’t until the beginning of their freshman year of college, when that relationship ended, that the possibility for something more opened up. However, Nyleigh swore off dating altogether, determined to focus on herself. Kyler, on the other hand, had other ideas. They had only ever known each other as just acquaintances, sharing a few memories but never venturing beyond their friend group. When high school ended, they went their separate ways—Nyleigh heading to the University of Sioux Falls and eventually Pittsburg State University, and Kyler to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It seemed as though their story might have ended there, a fleeting connection left in the past. But then came winter break during college freshman year. As Kyler drove home from college for the holidays, he made a seemingly random decision to reach out to Nyleigh. The two hadn't spoken since high school graduation, yet the message was bold and a little cheeky: “Are you still dating your stupid boyfriend?” (Spoiler alert: She wasn’t.) He then followed up with an invitation to go to Topgolf with a group of friends. Intrigued but skeptical, Nyleigh agreed. While the evening didn’t exactly set the stage for sparks—one of Kyler’s friends seemed determined to monopolize her attention—Kyler didn’t give up. He asked her to hang out again the very next night, and to her surprise, she said yes. From that moment on, they were nearly inseparable. Whether it was going to a movie, sitting in the Runza parking lot for hours just talking about life, or simply enjoying each other’s company, they quickly became fixtures in each other’s lives. Even on Christmas night, Kyler was by Nyleigh’s side—to the point where her parents started questioning who this mysterious baseball player "friend" was. Nyleigh, hesitant to admit what was blossoming, brushed it off with a vague description. But by the time winter break ended, it was clear that this was more than just a casual friendship. Despite the physical distance and busy schedules that came with attending different colleges, Kyler was undeterred. He made those long five-hour drives to visit Nyleigh, determined to show her that what they had was worth pursuing. He was so certain that he’d found “his wife” that he told his college friends they were dating—even before they officially were! For Nyleigh, it all felt almost too good to be true, but Kyler’s persistence and genuine care won her over. After three months of late-night conversations, countless miles traveled, and even one moment of rejection, they finally made their relationship official.
