How We Met

High School Crush

Hunter and I went to Rockford Public Schools together - me being one year older than him. We went to the same elementary school and the same middle school leading up to high school. I always thought he was super cute; he has the best smile and girls always love a cute football player, but I was always too shy growing up to talk to him. Fast forward to July of 2023, I was on a boat with my bridesmaid Madi and I was telling her how I still followed Hunter on social media after all that time had passed and that I wondered if he was single. Madi encouraged me to, for the first time in my life, reach out and make the first move (thanks Mads!). I was so nervous and felt out of place, but I took the risk anyway. We went on our first date two weeks later and have been inseparable ever since.

How He Proposed

No, I Didn't See It Coming!

For our first anniversary in July of 2024, Hunter got to pick what we did to celebrate. You guessed it - we went to South Haven to go fishing on Grandpa Phil's boat! He told me in the spring of 2025 that I got to decide where and how we celebrated this year. This was my one chance to show him around where I lived in Chicago (Lakeview East neighborhood) and I couldn't pass it up. I made the itinerary, got the train tickets and booked our reservations. Hunter was just going with the flow - he didn't say much and had minimal preferences for what we did with the weekend. As far as I knew, no proposal was coming. Which I understood - Hunter isn't a "city guy" and he knows my one ask regarding the proposal was that it not be in public where a bunch of strangers would gawk. We got off the train to Chicago at 9 AM and decided to walk around my old neighborhood before getting lunch. We walked past my old apartment, through the park that I potty trained our Bernedoodle, Sully, in and made a plan to walk along the shoreline. Of course it was busy, so Hunter asked that we take a roundabout path through a quieter spot in the park. I had just mentioned that I brought more Polaroid film on the trip and that we needed to take more pictures together. He agreed and said "want to take one now?" He set up his phone "on a timer" and we posed for what seemed like awhile. When I went to check the photo, Hunter said my name and when I turned he was down on one knee with the ring box in hand. I instantly dropped my face in my hands and couldn't believe what I was seeing. He surprised me so well and it's a memory I'll cherish forever and ever.
