It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Capiz. The parish church was elevated into a cathedral following the creation of the Diocese of Capiz on January 27, 1951. However, the diocese retained the old name of Capiz as it predates the change of the city name to Roxas on April 11, 1951.

Local legend tells that is once a part of a resting giant - its "Mata" (eyes) and "Talinga" (ears) from where the island's name came from. Local fisher folks would refer to it as the "Good Luck Island," believed to give good luck and a bountiful catch when they write the name of their boats on the side of the island before they go fishing for the first time.
