Located 10 minutes north. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Hapuna also offers consistently good conditions for swimming, body boarding and sunbathing.
Located 1 hour north. A steep but short hike will take you down a lush tropical cliff to a rugged black sand beach. The trip down can be made leisurely in 30-45 minutes one way, and we recommend taking a picnic basket along to enjoy while sitting one the rugged beach. Pololu is one of the most scenic valleys of the state! Don’t forget to take your camera and comfortable hiking boots (tennis shoes will do on a dry day), and plenty of water.
Located 1 hour south. Greenwell Farms offers farm tours continuously from 8:30am through 4:30pm Monday through Sunday. Take an interesting personal walking tour of coffee fields and the processing facilities, enjoy free samples of various coffee products, and see a working Hawaiian farm. Located 1.5 hours north-east. Often acclaimed as the most beautiful area in Hawaii, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is a photographer’s and nature lover’s paradise. Featuring over 2,500 species of tropical plants from around the globe, an orchid garden, macaw aviary and oceanfront walk. The Garden is open from 9am to 5pm daily, with Garden admissions ending at 4pm. This self-guided tour takes an average of about an hour and a half. The walking distance is just over a mile, round trip.
Located 1.5 hours north-east. Akaka Falls State Park, located along the northeastern Hamakua Coast, you can see two gorgeous waterfalls on one short hike. The pleasant 0.4-mile uphill hike will take you through a lush rainforest filled with wild orchids, bamboo groves and draping ferns. As you follow the paved footpath, you'll first see 100-foot Kahuna Falls. Continue to follow the loop around the bend, and you'll discover towering Akaka Falls which plummet’s 442-feet into a stream-eroded gorge. Beautiful Akaka Falls is perhaps Hawaii Island's most famous waterfall. Easily accessible, this hike takes less than an hour.
(Meet at the Beach Shack by 8:00am) These hikes go off the beaten path a bit, walking on grass, gravel, rocks and sand. On a hiking difficulty scale of 0 to 10, with 10 high, this hike is a 4 when considering the walking paths and distance. Hikers will explore and have a glimpse into the past when venturing out on our beautiful resort property. Please check with the Beach Shack or Concierge Desk as this complimentary hike will only be available on certain days of the week.
