The Reef 28 Hotel & Spa

The happy couple will be staying here, too! Reef 28 has received wonderful reviews and is centrally located—just a 15-minute walk (or 5-minute ride) from the wedding venue. While only 2 short blocks from the beach, it isn’t directly on the sand (you will also have to carry your towels/chairs/etc. to the beach, or pay ~$60 to use chairs from a beach club). Also note this is an adults-only resort. We wanted to share our “home base” with you so it’s easy for guests to be close to each other (and to us!) without endless hotel searching. We picked Reef 28 after doing the legwork—proximity to the beach, 5th Avenue and the venue, flexibility of an optional all-inclusive plan, great reviews (including excellent food and a locally famous rooftop), hotel capacity, room quality, and overall value. Its prime location also means it might be livelier and noisier than some might prefer. Though only a few reviews mentioned noise, they also noted that the hotel was quick to help find a solution. The hotel reviews (and we’ve read MANY) are some of the best we’ve found, but please keep all this in mind as you consider your options! If you’re looking for more of a classic, quiet, beachside getaway—where you won’t be in the middle of town and don’t mind taking taxis to our events—further down this list we’ve included some other hotel suggestions that may be a better fit. Reef 28 Hotel & Spa - ALL INCLUSIVE

While Playa del Carmen has restaurants, cafes, and bars galore, some may want to maximize their relaxation and stick to the beach or the hotel. Reef 28 offers an all-inclusive option which includes all food and drinks. Use this link to book within our room block for a discount. Mahekal Beach Resort

We love this one! Mahekal offers a more laid-back beach escape and would have been our top pick if not for the slightly higher price. We weren’t able to secure a low enough group rate (and they were requiring 4 night stays), but some guests are reporting they found great promotions here—so if your timing is right, you may be able to snag a great deal! Nestled between tropical gardens and the sand, it has little bungalows, multiple pools, and lots of private beachfront, all just a short walk from 5th Avenue. The vibe is rustic and boho-chic—less glitzy but charming and clean! Also a very short walk to the reception.

El Taj Oceanfront & Beachside Condo Hotel

We like this hotel (well, condos)! It is family-friendly and has direct access to the beach. It’s about a 25-minute walk or a 10-minute taxi ride to the venue. Pricing is similar to Reef 28, and while quieter and with beach access, it has less amenities than a resort.

Royal Hideaway Playacar

If you’re looking for a more traditional all-inclusive resort experience and would prefer to skip the bustle of the city center, Playacar could be a great fit. You’ll find lots of space and plenty of beach! It’s on the far side of town—around an hour’s walk, but just 20 minutes by taxi to the venue. Not as flashy as some resorts, but it’s nice! Note it is adults-only and all-inclusive. Starting prices for this all-inclusive stay are lower than Mahekal’s all-inclusive stay (this is without a promotion, but we’ve seen a couple of guests find the inverse with a good deal!)

The Fives Downtown Hotel

This hotel is similar to Reef 28 but is family-friendly and slightly more affordable. It’s a bit farther from the venue—about a 30-minute walk or a quick taxi ride. While it’s not directly on the beach, a lovely beach is just a 5-minute walk away.

Hyatt Centric Playa del Carmen

One of their two Hyatt Centric locations- similar to the Reef. It doesn’t have direct beach access, but a beach is just a few minutes’ walk away and family-friendly. Well-priced but also further from the venue (30 min walk or still a quick taxi!)

Hyatt Centric Beach House

Hyatt Centric Beach House is a great family-friendly spot steps from the beach and with direct access. It’s about 30 minutes from the venue. It has fewer rooms than many others hotels and is a little bit pricier but a very nice spot!
