Knight and Nikki both went to Kenyon college and moved to Columbus, OH after graduating. When they hung out for the first time, they talked for hours until 2am. In 2019, Knight moved to Boston. After years of a great friendship, Knight called Nikki one day and told her he wanted to give a relationship a shot. They decided to try long distance; after all, they could visit each other every month. Then, the world shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Their long distance relationship took a different form: 11 hour drives, simultaneous tv watching, and Zoom workouts. Finally, Nikki moved to Boston to begin graduate school in 2021. Knight and Nikki moved in together in a tiny apartment until Toby came into their lives (no, they weren't looking for a dog, but Toby was too cute). June 2024 was a big month for their little family- moving to a wonderful new condo two days after they got engaged!
Knight's birthday celebration for Nikki started with breakfast in bed and delivery of the printed itinerary for the day. Unbeknownst to Nikki, Knight switched out her line-a-day journal with a duplicate journal that he had hollowed out and put an engagement ring inside (Knight got Nikki her first line-a-day journal 6 years prior and had recently gotten her a new one where he wrote notes at the top on dates of special relationship events). They had the best day ever: couples massage, lunch on Newbury Street, dress shopping, a Toby walk, and dinner in the North End. At dinner, the topic of engagement came up, and Knight mentioned how he didn't even have Nikki's ring yet. So, naturally, Nikki's thoughts of the possibility of a proposal that night diminished. Then, when they got home and changed into comfy clothes, Nikki was sure there was a 0% chance. On their final Toby walk, Nikki even said "Knight, you really got me. With everything you did today, I thought you were going to propose. You really set the bar high for birthdays." The last item on the agenda was for Nikki to journal in her line-a-day journal. Knight prepared to get down on one knee, but to his surprise, Nikki picked up the journal, grabbed a separate journal, and proceeded to journal in the larger journal for 35 minutes! Finally, Nikki was writing and speaking out loud: “I am writing about the best day in my line-a-day…” Knight interjected and said, “well, you can't end the day until you see the note I left you in your journal”. Nikki excitedly picked up the line-a-day journal, opened it up, and confetti and the ring came pouring out. She was so shocked! Knight proposed, they took in the moment on their confetti-filled floor, and they excitedly Facetimed their parents to finish the perfect proposal day.
