We met in May 2013, when I (Meghan) was living abroad as an Au Pair in Barendrecht, the Netherlands after graduating from UGA. The family I worked for had their old babysitter come over to help me with the kids due to the language barrier and we decided to get a drink together that night at the local bar. Well little did I know that I would be lucky enough to meet Niels and his group of friends my first week of living there. I quickly became good friends with the group, who took me under their wing (mostly because they were confused why an American was living in the small town of Barendrecht) and made Holland feel like home for me. Well long story short, Niels and I were drawn to each other and started dating that Fall. After my Au Pair visa expired and I moved back home in May 2014, we had no idea what the future held for us but we knew we wanted to work towards one together. So after many trips back and forth between Atlanta/Nashville & the Netherlands, I moved back to Rotterdam to live with Niels in January of 2018 and we haven't killed each other yet!
Taking advantage of living in Europe, we had a few extra vacation days last year that we decided to spend in Mykonos, Greece. Myself, being the queen of planning, thought I knew all the things to do, eat and see in Mykonos but Niels had something up his sleeve as well. The first day we arrived, we were walking around the windmills (which Niels later revealed was his original plan to propose then) but it ended up being so windy that we could barely hear each other speak. So we went instead and had a drink to watch the sunset and then ate dinner, all while I made fun of Niels for having a sweatshirt tied around his waist. After dinner, though, Niels made us walk back over by the windmills and revealed the ring box which his sweatshirt had been hiding all day- oops! After a few tears and me trying the ring on, Niels reminded me that I hadn't officially said yes so I quickly said YES and we were able to celebrate the rest of the trip as a newly engaged couple.
