Centro Histórico

Centro Histórico

Quito, Ecuador

A trip to the centro histórico is a must while visiting Quito. It is the first UNESCO World Heritage site in the world to get this distinction and it has the best preserved colonial downtown in Latin America with over 5000 inventoried buildings. You can see spanish architecture mixed with ecuadorian culture and customs. Also some of the most beautiful churches in South America that include La Compañîa de Jesús, a church that is fully gold plated inside, or the Basîlica del Voto Nacional which is the largest church in the country, where you can climb to the bell towers for the 360 degree view on top. The Church and Monastery of San Francisco is a stunning church and the cloisters in the monastery are a unique experience in the city. After 6 pm sunset, this beautiful part of town can be known for pickpocketing and we recommend to avoid it at night. As in any populated foreign city, we advise to always be aware of your surroundings and your valuables!

Quito City Tour Bus

Quito City Tour Bus

The easiest way to see the major sites of the city is to hop on the Quito City Tour Bus. For just $15 you can hop on and off the bus and tour the city. While on the bus, you will have a guide that will explain the major parts of the city, both in Spanish and English. The best part of the ride is the stop on top of the Panecillo, or the little mountain in the middle of the city. You get great views of the Quito and get an up-close view of the statue of the Virgin of Panecillo.

Teleférico de Quito

On the other side of the city, you can ride the teléferico or cable car to the top of Pichincha, the volcano guarding the city, for a view of the entire city. At the top of the mountain, you can swing over the city, drink hot chocolate, and take in the views of Quito. If you are feeling adventurous (and ok with the altitude) you can also continue the climb up after you ride to the top of Pichincha. This hike takes several hours and is only recommended for experienced hikers. If you choose this option, make sure you are in good shape and pack food for your trip

Mitad del Mundo ( Middle of the Earth )

Mitad del Mundo ( Middle of the Earth )

Mitad del Mundo is a short trip outside the city center and entry costs $5. Here you can take the iconic picture standing on the equator with the monument in the background. They also have several experiments you can do while at the equator, and you can explore traditional homes from the different regions (jungle, mountain, and beach) of Ecuador. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Quito.
