How It All Began

Just two students who fell in love over the gavel.

You probably know that Nicoletta and Sam met at Fairfield University, but you might not know that it was politics (translation: student government) that brought them together. When they first stepped on campus as freshman, Nicoletta and Sam both ran for spots on the student senate (shoutout to FUSA!). While passing out flyers in the campus cafeteria, Nicoletta was introduced to Sam and immediately picked up on his warmth and genuine nature (plus he was pretty cute), and he noticed Nicoletta's bubbly personality and sense of humor (and thought she was pretty cute, too). They both got voted in—yay!—and started to get to know each other over weekly senate meetings, discovering that they both lived in Trumbull, CT before Sam moved in elementary school and that their parents both grew up in the same towns. Small world moments...or fate? Nicoletta and Sam developed a friendship over the course of freshman year, and sophomore year Sam became the chair of student life while Nicoletta became the chair of academics—in other words, they started working on campus initiatives together. While tackling topics like printer placements and coffee distribution, they began to realize they had strong feelings for each other beyond the gavel. Sam asked Nicoletta to be his girlfriend October 24, 2011, and one graduation, multiple jobs, three apartments, and a total of 9 years later (soon to be 10?!), here we are embarking on our next chapter.

Popping The Question

Mi amore!

Nicoletta studied abroad in Florence in the spring of 2013, during which Sam came to visit her for a full week. They explored the majestic city together and all its wonders, eating every carb and gelato in sight and taking in all the historic monuments and art Florence had to offer. Only one word can describe the week-long adventure: magical. Fast-forward five years, and Nicoletta and Sam were planning a vacation to revisit the City of Renaissance in November 2018. While Nicoletta was telling everyone in arms reach about her suspicions of getting engaged (don't do what she did), Sam was busy planning the perfect proposal. He hired an international photographer to show up onsite the day he planned to pop the question at the historic church of San Miniato that overlooked the entire city of Florence. On the second day of their trip, Sam suggested walking across the Arno river to a scenic spot called Michelangelo Piazza that showcased scenic views of the city—a place where Sam and Nicoletta went the first time they were in Italy together. It was a cloudy day with a chance of rain, but the Duomo looked more beautiful in the distance than ever before, its terracotta dome contrasting against the white sky. After taking in the views, Sam guided Nicoletta to the elevated San Miniato church, where an open space exposing Florence took their breath away—more than the first one, even. Sam said they should take a selfie, to which Nicoletta smiled at because she’s usually the one who mentions this. Something is about to happen, she thought. Suddenly, a man emerged and offered to take a photo of the two of them, handing over his green umbrella as it slightly drizzled. And that's when Sam got down on one knee. It was the easiest decision both of them ever had to make, and after an hour-long photoshoot, they spent the rest of the evening drinking champagne, eating cheese and prosciutto, and being in the moment.
