Founded in the late 1600s, Beaufort is North Carolina’s third-oldest town and features a rich maritime history, beautifully restored historic homes, and a 12-block district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At its center, the Beaufort Historic Site showcases 18th- and 19th-century coastal Carolina life.
The N.C. Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located within the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area and features two scenic nature trails: the Roosevelt Nature Trail and the Alice Hoffman Trail, accessible from the Aquarium’s Saltmarsh Boardwalk.
The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center showcases local culture with exhibits on decoy carving, boat building, and commercial fishing, including live demonstrations and a decoy collection. It features interpretive trails around Willow Pond, a restored wooden boat, and rotating exhibits on regional history.
