It was a freezing cold New York City night on January 10th 2019. Steve and I met at Ardesia Wine Bar in Hell's Kitchen which would turn out to be one of our favorite go-to spots in the city. Steve ordered a bottle of wine and we got to know one another until they closed the place down. A week and a day later, we met for dinner and drinks at Bea and again stayed until they closed the place down. Our third date started over lunch at City Bistro in Hoboken followed by glasses of wine at Bin 14 - it's much harder to close places down when you start earlier in the day! Before we knew it, Steve supported me at a Lyme disease event, he brought me to see They Shall Not Grow Old, a World War I documentary (in color and 3D) at the movie theater, and we were introducing each other to our friends and siblings. As the days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, it was obvious to both of us how much we enjoyed spending time together.
At the time, Nicole and I were living in Hell’s Kitchen. Nicole mentioned that she wanted to visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. I've always had fond memories of the tree since watching Home Alone 2 in theaters as a five year old back in 1992, and thought a visit to Rockefeller Center four days prior to Christmas was the perfect spot for the proposal! It was a cold Saturday evening in Manhattan on the winter solstice of 2019. Several thousand people were also visiting Rockefeller Center. At the time, no one in that crowd could have ever imagined what the country and the rest of the world would begin to face only a few short months later. Everyone seemed to be enjoying life and excited for the upcoming Christmas and New Years’ holidays. Nicole and I carefully made our way through the crowd until I found some room to make my move. I pretended that I needed to tie my shoe, took the ring out of my jeans pocket and stayed on one knee to propose. Nicole was elated and said yes! I was thrilled! After the proposal, Nicole and I walked a few blocks to a wine bar to celebrate. After glasses of champagne and phone calls to our families, we headed over to Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse for a delicious dinner - a special place to us as it’s where we had celebrated our first Valentines’ Day together. December 21, 2019 was an incredible night and we look forward to celebrating another spectacular night with everyone on April 29, 2022!
