We met while living in Salt Lake City, UT in the summer of 2016. Nick was attending school at the University of Utah and Carolyn had just started her first year of residency at the VA hospital. On our first date we met at Whiskey Street, a bar downtown. We spent the next few weeks exploring Salt Lake City and hiking in the mountains. By the time it was fall, we decided we were ready to take our relationship to the next level and bought ski passes to the same resort. While waiting for the snow, we spent our time together running at our favorite parks, playing board games with friends, and watching football games on porch couch. Over the next months we spent as much time together as we could, even if it meant working next to each other in the library. We were fortunate that Carolyn was able to stay in SLC for a second year residency. Year two brought us more wonderful friendships and so many adventures. In the spring, Nick graduated and was commissioned as an Naval Officer and Carolyn finished residency. It was time to move back to the East Coast.
We had planned to spend 4th of July in Southampton, NY visiting Carolyn's grandparents and spending time with family. We spent the day at the beach, had a wine tasting on the porch (shout-out to Poppy for winning), and were just finishing dinner when Carolyn's dad announced that we were going to walk down to watch the sunset. Carolyn's brother and sister-in-law said they wanted to get some pictures of the sunset. We walked down to the water, took a few sibling pictures, then Nick stepped in for a photo, got down on one knee, and popped the question! In shock, Carolyn first laughed, cried, and hugged Nick, before he reminded her that she had yet to answer the question. She said YES!
